Walters named ESPN The Magazine First Team Academic All-American
NEW CONCORD, OHIO -
Muskingum College senior Justin Walters has been named ESPN The Magazine First Team Academic All-American. This marks the second straight year that Walters has earned ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American honors (2007 - Third Team).
Walter's, an Economics and Education major, who carries a 4.00 grade-point-average, is the only student-athlete in Muskingum men's track & field history that has garnered Academic All-American honors.
The Pickerington, Ohio, native is a 12-time varsity letterwinner and has been recognized by conference officials with academic all-league honors for four years and was honored with the United States Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic Award and the Ohio Athletic Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Month Award.
Walters’ success in the classroom is mirrored by his achievements in cross country and track & field. He is the current Muskingum record holder in the indoor mile, distance medley relay, 1,000 meter, 3,000 meter, 4x800 and 3,000 meter steeplechase. He is a two-time (2007, 2008) Ohio Athletic Conference champion in the steeplechase and won the All-Ohio championship in the steeplechase in 2008.
He has been on the Dean’s List every semester and is the President of the Kappa Delta Pi National Education Honorary. Walter’s presented at the national Kappa Delta Pi convention and is a member of the National Honorary Omicron Delta Kappa. Additionally, he is the President of Muskingum’s Leadership Group AGORA and has served as a Resident Assistant at Muskingum for three years and as a First Year Experience leader for two. Walters is also active in the Muskingum community tutoring children ages 12-17.
The ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America teams are selected by the College Sports Information Director's Association of America (CoSIDA). To be eligible for nomination, an individual must be a starter or a key reserve with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.20. In addition, student-athletes must have completed one full academic year at their respective institutions.
