Grants


Grants are gift-aid to students which do not have to be repaid, and for which financial need is an eligibility criterion. Need based grants available to students attending Muskingum College are:

Federal Pell Grants
These are federal grants awarded to students according to specific federal eligibility criteria. Award amounts are estimated to range from $800-4,731 in 2008-09, dependent on level of federal funding.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (SEOG)
SEOG awards are made to very high-need students from federal fund allocations to Muskingum. Award amounts generally range from $500-2,000 per year, dependent on level of federal funding.

Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG)
For 2009-10 ACG is given to students who are U.S. citizens or eligible non-citizens who are eligible for Pell Grants, attending at least part-time in a two or four year degree program. Students must be in their first or second academic year. Students must have completed a rigorous high school program of study. First year students must have completed high school on or after January 1, 2006, and second year students must have completed high school on or after January 1, 2005. To be eligible for the second year ACG a student must also have a 3.0 GPA at the completion of their first year. The first year award is $750 and the second year award is $1,300.

National Science and Math Access to Retain Talent Grant (SMART)
SMART grants are given to students who are U.S. citizens or eligible non-citizens, eligible for Pell Grants, attending at least part-time in a four year degree program. Students must be in their third or fourth academic year. Students must be pursuing a major in mathematics, science (including physical, life, and computer sciences), technology, engineering, or a critical foreign language, such as Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Japanese and Russian. Students must have a 3.0 GPA. The SMART grant amount is $4,000 per year for a maximum of 2 years. A students GPA and major are checked each semester for eligibility as well as their enrollment in a class in their major.

Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education
(TEACH) Grant program
The Teach Grant program provides up to $4,000 a year in grant assistance to a n undergraduate student who agrees to serve for at least 4 years as a full-time teacher in a high-need field in a public or private elementary or secondary school that serves students from low-income families. A TEACH Grant recipient who does not complete their required teaching within a specified time frame or fails to meet certain other requirements of the TEACH Grant program will be required to repay the TEACH Grant as a direct unsubsidized loan under the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program.

Ohio College Opportunity Grant (OCOG)
Recipients must be Ohio residents and must file the FAFSA by October 1, 2009. Students may be full or part-time. OCOG will be awarded to students with an EFC between 0000 and 2190 (as long as the total family income is not greater than $75,000). Award amounts range from $600-$4992 per year, dependent upon level of state funding. The OCOG program is replacing the OIG program which has been phased out. Any student who received OIG will now receive OCOG, if eligible.

Muskingum College Grants , Pooled Grants and Endowed Scholarships
Muskingum College often awards grants to full-time students demonstrating financial need. Award amounts generally range from $500-$8,000 per year. The size of grant is based primarily on the amount of need and availability of other grants and scholarships, though consideration is given to academic performance and abilities. Pooled grants and certain need-based endowed scholarships are subsidized by Muskingum endowment funds restricted for financial aid.

Muskingum College PLUS Grants
Similar to Muskingum College Grants, these are awarded to full-time students in the PLUS Program for students with disabilities affecting learning. They are designed to assist with the extra fee charged for PLUS Program, with yearly amounts up to $2,000.

National Presbyterian Scholarships
Special Presbyterian Church (USA) scholarships are awarded to full-time students demonstrating financial need. Awards range from $500-1,500. Applications must be obtained from Presbyterian churches, and must be filed with National Presbyterian Scholarship Foundation by December 1 of the student’s senior year in high school.
