September 23	Faculty Special Events *An Evening with Asra Nomani* 7:00 p.m., Boyd Science Center, room 343 Asra Q. Nomani, a former reporter for the Wall Street Journal, is the author of Standing Alone: An American Woman’s Struggle for the Soul of Islam. After September 11, 2001, while on leave from the paper, she became a correspondent for Salon magazine, reporting in Pakistan. She earned an Online Journalists Award for feature reporting for her dispatches from there. Her inspiration has come in part from the kidnapping and murder of her friend, Daniel Pearl, in 2002 in Karachi, Pakistan. Pearl was staying at her home in Karachi when he was kidnapped. She has written on issues related to Islam for the Washington Post, the New York Times, Time magazine, American Prospect, Slate and Sojourners magazine. Her work has appeared in such magazines as Cosmopolitan, Sports Illustrated for Women, Runner’s World and People.

October 7	The Poetry Circuit and the Department of English John Hoppenthaler, poet 4:00 p.m., Cambridge Hall, room 18 John Hoppenthaler is the author of two books of poetry, Lives of Water (2003) and Anticipate the Coming Reservoir (2008), both from Carnegie Mellon University Press. He has published poems, essays and interviews in such distinguished journals as Ploughshares, The Southern Review, Virginia Quarterly Review, Chelsea and Arts & Letters. He is poetry editor of Kestrel, West Virginia’s leading literary journal, and an assistant professor of English at East Carolina University. October 8	Ernest Callenbach, author of Ecotopia 7:00 p.m., Brown Chapel Ernest Callenbach is a writer and editor best known for his visionary novel Ecotopia - an environmental classic that has sold almost a million copies. He has also written the novels Ecotopia Emerging and Publisher’s Lunch, and a half dozen nonfiction books on ecological issues. Born and brought up in rural central Pennsylvania, he attended the University of Chicago, where he was caught up in the new wave of serious attention to film as an art. After six months in Paris at the Sorbonne, seeing four films a day, he returned to Chicago and earned a master’s degree in English and communications. He then migrated to California and joined the staff of the University of California Press (UCP). There he founded and edited the internationally known journal Film Quarterly. October 22 - 26	*On the Verge or The Geography of Yearning* A play by Eric Overmyer Directed by Dr. Diane Rao October 22 – 25, 8:00 p.m., and October 26, 2:00 p.m. This women-centric, 1985 travel fantasy features three women who are never satisfied. Their constant pursuit of adventure takes them far away from their native Victorian America, and this last trip educates Fanny, Mary and Alexandra beyond all measure. October 26	Dr. Scott Watkins, pianist Assistant Professor of Piano, Jacksonville University 3:00 p.m., Brown Chapel An active chamber musician, Watkins has performed with the LaSalle Quartet, and is a founding member of the Florida Arts Trio, with whom he is frequently heard. Much in demand as an accompanist, he has appeared with soprano Elizabeth Futral and baritone Steven White for their recital of Wolff's Italian Song Book in Chicago, and also in performances with violinists Eugene Fodor and Hillary Hahn. His recital at Muskingum College will feature works by Scarlatti, Debussy, Liszt, and Beethoven.
